Fire Prevention is our Intention

Fire prevention is certainly the intention of Safe and Sound Fire Ltd. Fire alarm maintenance is one of the most important areas when it comes to looking after your home or business. If your fire alarm fails in the event of an outbreak of fire you could be putting your life or the lives of your employees at risk.

In the first four days of 2011 five people lost their lives in house fires in Scotland. Tragically the total number of deaths in fires in 2009/10 was 59 and the total number of fires was 38,658. Alarming statistics indeed. Statistics that prove that still not enough is being done to prevent fires and preserve lives.

Fire destroys everything in its path and the causes of fires in the workplace range from faulty wiring to arson. Extinguishers should always be on the premises and staff must know how to use them. Any organisation can be affected at any time. A fire warning system must be in place and staff must be told how to respond to it.

ID Fraud

Sometimes it seems nothing is sacred in this life. I was on Facebook a few months ago and got a friend request from an "American soldier". I accepted his friend request and in no time I was getting sweet emails promising me the earth. Gullible as I am, I fell for it, oo an American soldier fighting in Iraq who wants to come to see me. The joy was soon over when I received an email from a "General" who couldn't even spell English asking me to forward money. I was so livid I sent the entire contents of my junk folder to the email address I had been given and the guy was so confused he sent me an apologetic email from Nigeria. Today I read a message from Charli in Edinburgh. Somebody has reposted her photo and details on Facebook using another name.

We can't be too careful about what we put out into cyberspace. Never ever post that you are off on holiday when you go away because the burglars are watching and if you are booking anything online make sure that there is a little security lock on the page when you do.

Being a bag lady I shudder to think what the contents of my handbag would be worth to a mugger so I keep what I can in my pockets. If I am travelling and carrying money my cash is in one of those zip up purses around my waist along with my passport and my address is never anywhere in my bag.

Lets all keep safe folks. Shred your letters before you throw them out and be careful. ID fraud is happening and we can't be too careful.

Fuel

With the budget once again over and done with drivers will welcome the 1p drop in the cost of petrol. Rather mean of the Chancellor I think. Negotiate Now, a Glasgow company, is offering fuel discounts to owners of businesses who want to be included in their sophisticated search engine. They are currently recruiting hundreds of businesses in a limitless amount of categories. With them drivers can save 5p on a litre of fuel, be it petrol or diesel, and more if they are travelling on motorways. This is an offer which is definitely to be taken advantage of so if you are a driver logon to their website now and see what you can save.

Google's Online L ibrary Plans Shelved

Google has had to shelve plans to create an online library making millions of books available to everyone who has an internet connection after it was blocked by Judge Denny Chin in Manhatten. A settlement worth $125,000,000 had been agreed on in 2008 but the Judge ruled that the creation of thei library would "Simply go too far".

The Authors' Guild and Association of American Publishers welcomed the ruling. They had fought the settlement and accused Google of "Massive copyright infringement" for scanning books to be published online. 6500 authors had agreed to "opt out" but Judge Chin said "the settlement would grant Google significant rights to exploit entire books without permission of the copyright owners".  He referred to out of print books whose authors could not be contacted, Google would have the monopoly over unclaimed works. He said that the final decision should be with the American Congress.

Foreign authors and publishers and countries stated that the settlement is a violation of international law. Objections were raised by many countries.

Google are now considering their options and will carry on working to make more books "Discoverable online" through Google books and other services.

The Open Book Alliance which includes Yahoo and Amazon said the ruling was "A victory for the public interest and for competition in the literary and internet ecosystems".
